Tailored solutions for large populations
This project consisted of a 450 seat theatre, purpose designed studios for arts, recording studios, animation and 3D labs, all centered around active learning zones and an open gallery space on ground floor.
Auditoriums present interesting challenges based on large populations and potential fuel loads coupled with providing flexibility within the space for differing functions.
A performance based approach utilising fire/smoke modelling to assess tenability conditions coupled with a real time evacuation analysis was undertaken to demonstrate occupant life safety and fire brigade intervention. This considered the deletion of the proscenium wall between stage and auditorium; i.e., single compartment philosophy for smoke movement to one exhaust point.
Through the design phase, the performance assessment assisted in driving the architectural and mechanical designs whereby the team was able to advise on the suitability and location of exits and typical exhaust rates to maintain tenability respectively.
